President Joe Biden once again repeated the lie that former Trump referred to Nazis as “very fine people” shortly after a deadly rally in Charlottesville. A reporter asked Biden how he could be sure that his successor in 2024 would not undo his “diplomatic approach” to NATO. The president responded by telling a story he has told since 2019, claiming that Charlottesville motivated him to come out of retirement and run for president.
“I wasn’t going to run again, and I mean that sincerely, I had no intention of running for president again, until I saw those folks coming out of the fields in Virginia carrying torches and carrying Nazi banners, and literally singing the same vile rhyme they used in Germany,” Biden said. “And then the gentleman you mentioned [Trump] was asked what he thought and a young woman was killed, a protester, and he was asked what he thought, he said there were ‘very good people’ on both sides. And that’s when I decided I wasn’t going to be quiet any longer.”
Despite Biden’s repeated use of the lie, Trump never referred to Nazis or white supremacists as “very fine people.”
The hoax was born during an unscripted press conference that took place shortly after the rally, where Trump pushed back against the media’s attempts to tie extremists groups in with his base. Trump merely pointed out that the “Unite The Right” rally was originally organized as a protest against the removal of a Confederate statue. The “very fine people” referenced by Trump were the peaceful protesters, not the extremists, who the president condemned “totally” on numerous occasions.
Video of my confrontation with @JoeBiden over Charlottesville “very fine people” hoax. Note he always uses same script (bulging veins etc) like he’s trained to recite it. Media covered this but none linked to the transcript of Trump’s remarks that proves Biden lies 8/8/19 pic.twitter.com/6WD6q1Yhy8

The President later made another false claim before U.S. allies when he stated that multiple U.S. Capitol Police officers were killed on January 6. Despite Biden’s false claims, 0 police officers were killed on January 6.
