LeBron Takes Home Worst Actor Award For ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

After playing himself in “Space Jam: A New Legacy” last summer, LeBron James took home the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor at this year’s ceremony. The film was nominated for multiple categories and ultimately won three awards, including Worst Actor, Worst Screen Combo and Worst Remake.

LeBron’s movie was a remake of the popular 90’s film that featured Michael Jordan. In both films, their respective stars are transported into a cartoon world and are forced to play basketball with Looney Tunes characters. Though both movies were made for children, there was significant hype around “Space Jam: A New Legacy” for the nostalgia factor. NBA fans who grew up in the 90’s were excited to watch the remake with their children, contributing to a successful opening weekend.

The film received an overwhelmingly negative response among critics, however. Space Jam II currently holds a rating of 4.4 stars on IMDB and a 26% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Unsurprisingly, the film was nominated for multiple categories at the 42nd Annual Golden Raspberry Awards.

The Golden Raspberry Awards honor the worst of the movie industry on a yearly basis. The parody awards show was started by film industry veterans John J.B. Wilson and Mo Murphy, who held the first show in Wilson’s Hollywood living-room. Sylvester Stallone holds the record for Worst Actor wins with 10, while Madonna holds the top sport for Worst Actress with nine wins.

The Worst Actor victory for Lebron was his first in as many films. Additionally, Space Jam II took home Worst Remake while “Lebron James & any Warner cartoon character (or Time-Warner product) he dribbles on” took home Worst Screen Combo.

LeBron did not attend the ceremony, which some actors and actresses have done in the past. The four-time NBA MVP is currently in the middle of a career worst, injury-plagued season with the Lakers and is set to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
